Our 5 Favourite Space Savers

5 Storage Solutions For A Campervan

Downsizing to a van and finding a way to store everything you need to live is challenging, so every bit of space counts. Here are some of the ways that we saved space or created extra storage in our van.

Hanging Tea/Coffee/Sugar Containers

Save kitchen counter or cupboard space by hanging them from a high cupboard. The lid is screwed to the bottom of the cupboard so that you unscrew the bottom rather than taking the lid off.

I had seen a photo of something like this when we were researching, but we struggled to find the right type of containers. We were adamant that they needed to be plastic just in case they fell, and obviously they need to be screw-top, but finding something suitable wasn't easy. Luckily, on our last day of shopping we came across these rose gold disco balls that are actually drink flasks, which is even better because they have a straw hole in the top where we put the washer and screw, plus they match our splash-back.

Camping Wine Glasses

We came across these in The Range and they turned out to be a great little buy. They disassemble and screw back together to be compact, and can be hung. They swing about a bit when we drive, but that's fine because they're plastic. If we're drinking a spirit instead of wine, then we don't screw the stands on and have ourselves a short tumbler.

Toiletries Rack

We've screwed it onto the very sloped wall in our toilet and it's perfect for storing toiletry items that we use often. It doesn't get in the way and saves cupboard space for something else.

DIY Wall Pouches

We came up with these on the road because we weren't sure where to store blankets and jumpers. They're made from old flour sacks that we picked up from a French Boutique for €2 each. Family helped us cut and stitch them into handy pouches that we screwed to the wall. They're ideal for fabric items and add a bit of character. We used a side left over to make a roll down blind.

400 DVD Case

Sounds extreme, right? We have a TV-DVD for occasionally watching in the evening, but DVDs in their cases take up a lot of space and selecting a few to take with us is too hard of a choice. So we found this case on Amazon with 400 slots and now we can carry J's massive collection with us without losing much storage space.

And that's our five favourite space savers. Everything else pretty much involves using any available wall space or the sides of cupboards to attach a little rack, hook, or bungee cable. If you've converted a van, please share your favourite space savers in the comment section below.
